Athletics' 2022 Opening Day roster prediction

MESA, Ariz. — The A’s are entering a new chapter after parting ways with three of their stars in recent weeks. Those absences have created plenty of competition for Oakland’s roster, with more questions than answers as Opening Day quickly approaches.

New players will look to step into the leadership void in the A’s clubhouse after the trades of Chris Bassitt, Matt Chapman and Matt Olson. There are some veterans who remain, like Elvis Andrus and Tony Kemp, as well as homegrown big leaguers like Sean Murphy and Chad Pinder. But for the majority of the roster, starting positions will have to be largely determined on individual performance during Spring Training.

“We’re evaluating every day,” said A’s manager Mark Kotsay. “I think competition is a good thing for all aspects of the roster.”

The difficulty of final roster decisions will be eased a bit with the expected expansion of active rosters from 26 players to 28, which will reportedly happen for April. Per…
