Buck Showalter talks Max Scherzer potentially being Mets' Opening Day starter with Jacob deGrom's status uncertain

Mets manager Buck Showalter did not have an update on the status of RHP Jacob deGrom (shoulder tightness) before Friday’s spring training game at the St. Louis Cardinals. And less than a week away from Opening Day against the Washington Nationals, Showalter was not yet comfortable with the idea of slotting RHP Max Scherzer into deGrom’s start.

“We would look at that, looked at that yesterday and again this morning,” Showalter said of moving Scherzer up to Thursday. “Max, talking to him this morning … just letting him know what time tomorrow, because we might have to push that up with the weather. The infamous window may be from 10 to 12 instead of 11 to 1. But I’ll let you know. Talking to Max about that.

“In a perfect world, we get good news today (about deGrom) and we continue down that road. But we’re looking at other possibilities. I’d really like to stay away from everybody for changing four guys’ plans that are carefully scripted to begin the season with an extra day’s rest going in. I’d like to stay away from that, but we’ll see.”

DeGrom was scheduled Friday for a 9:30 a.m. MRI. Showalter added that GM Billy Eppler could have an update on the status of deGrom later in the day.

Scherzer has made two spring training appearances with the Mets, including a 90-pitch outing this past Sunday.
