Sooners’ late comeback falls short against Lamar

The Oklahoma Sooners will go into Easter Sunday frustrated as they fell to the Lamar University Cardinals 14-11 after a late comeback fell short.

The Cardinals got ahead early as they scored an unearned run in the top of the first on an RBI single courtesy of Matthew McDonald. The Sooners committed two errors in the opening frame and were down before even touching the bat.

The Sooners’ offense was stagnant through the first four innings, struggling to string anything together. OU started the game with three straight innings with only one hit and a stranded baserunner. The streak was broken in the bottom of the fourth when the side was retired in order.

The pitching staff had a rough night. Jake Bennett got the start for the Sooners, allowing six earned runs through 4.2 innings. Bennett picked up the loss in today’s contest.

The bottom of the fifth is when things got interesting.

Brett Squires got Oklahoma on the board with a three-run home run. Blake Robertson would get an RBI groundout later in the inning to bring the Sooners closer. At the end of five frames, it was 7-4 Cardinals.

The bullpen troubles that have plagued the Sooners all year returned as Lamar would hang five runs on the Sooners in the top of the sixth. Despite Tanner Tredaway’s three-run blast in the eighth to make it close again, the Sooners just couldn’t get all the way back into this ballgame.

OU will finish up this weekend with a rematch against the Pacific University Tigers at 11 A.M.
