Reds’ Joe Boyle Faces 12 Batters, Fans 10

Reds' Bryce Bonnin Looks For A Bounceback Year

Tuesday’s Notable Prospect Performers

Joe Boyle, RHP, Reds: Boyle made a name for himself in college at Notre Dame by touching 102 mph. And he was equally notable for his wildness that meant he rarely got onto the mound. So far this year, the control troubles are no longer in evidence. And much like Graham Ashcraft did in 2021, he’s showing he may be too good for high-A Dayton. Boyle has made two starts, and he’s yet to allow a hit.

Boyle struck out the side in the first, finishing the first two hitters with 96-97 mph elevated fastballs and then finishing off the third with a nasty breaking ball. He struck out the first two batters of the second with fastball finishers as well. Boyle’s stretch of strikeouts finally ended with an infield pop-up to end the second. But in the third, he struck out the side again, finishing all three with 96 mph fastballs. He started the fourth by freezing Parker Meadows with a curveball for the K. After a walk, he rung up Colt Keith on a fastball on the outer third. A caught stealing ended the fourth and he was lifted having thrown 75 pitches.

Boyle allowed only one walk and faced the minimum over four innings. The only ball put in play against him was a pop-up to the first baseman. He struck out 10 of the 12 batters he faced. It was a completely dominant performance.

Jay Groome, LHP, Red Sox: As great as Groome was in his 2022 debut, his second start for Double-A Portland was equally as bad. Groome’s night lasted only 25 pitches. After getting Jake Mangum to fly out, Francisco Alvarez singled. Groome then hit Bret Baty with a pitch and Ronny Mauricio doubled to score Alvarez. Groome then walked the next three batters faced and was lifted from the game.

Double-A Binghamton Lineup: Groome’s bad night was a good one for Mets prospects. Alvarez and Baty each had a hit and a run scored, but the star was Mauricio. Mauricio hit three doubles to continue a hot start to the season.

Marco Luciano, SS, Giants: Luciano, the Giants’ top prospect,…
