Vols defeat Kentucky, advance to championship game

A late offensive surge propelled top-seeded Tennessee into the Southeastern Conference Tournament championship game.

The Volunteers (52-7) scored 10 runs over the final two innings en route to defeating Kentucky (33-26), 10-2, Saturday in the SEC Tournament semifinals at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Hoover, Alabama.

UT, which tallied four times in the eighth inning and scored six more in the ninth, won its seventh consecutive game. Tennessee will play Florida in Sunday’s championship game. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. EDT and the game will be televised on ESPN2.

The Vols scored first as Jordan Beck hit a two-out triple. He scored on a wild pitch.

Beck scored again against the 12th-seeded Wildcats on an RBI single by Trey Lipscomb in the fourth inning.

Kentucky tied the contest with two runs in the fifth inning.

The game remained tied until Tennessee scored four times in the eighth inning. Jorel Ortega was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Lipscomb. Beck scored on a wild pitch and Cortland Lawson hit a two-run double to make it, 6-2.

Drew Gilbert opened the scoring in the eighth inning when he hit a two-run double. Lipscomb drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Blake Burke, the Vols’ freshman designated hitter, hit a three-run home run.

Chase Burns (8-1) earned the win as he pitched 4.2 innings. He surrendered two runs, three hits and one walk, while striking out eight.

Drew Beam started and pitched 3.1 innings. He allowed two hits and four walks and had six strikeouts.

Wyatt Evans pitched the ninth inning and had three strikeouts for Tennessee.
