Dragons’ Four Dingers Overpower Captains 6-3

Captains' Pitching Masterful in 2-1 Triumph

June 24, 2022 – Midwest League (MWL)Lake County Captains News Release

(DAYTON, OH) – Every run in the ball game was scored on a home run, with the Lake County Captains (35-32) launching one but the Dayton Dragons (40-27) tallying four in a 6-3 win on a 90-degree Friday evening at Day Air Ballpark.

Rodney Boone took the ball for the Captains and worked out of a double for a scoreless first. In the second, third and fifth the southpaw permitted a long ball, he also gained strikeouts in all of those innings.

In the second, Garrett Wolforth powered a two-run blast over the left field wall. The third run was plated in the third inning off a Nick Quintana solo shot.

Lake County offensively, tacked on all three of their runs in the fourth. After gaining only one hit through the first three, Petey Halpin and Gabriel Rodriguez each singled to put two runners on. With two outs and a two-strike count, Connor Kokx drove a ball to deep left field for a game-tying home run. Kokx now has a longball in back-to-back games after a two-run shot last night.

Dayton would recapture the lead, after a leadoff blast off the bat of Ashton Creal. It was Creal’s first game with the Dragons since June 3. Boone accumulated two more strikeouts and finished the day with eight. Jack DeGroat gained the final out of the frame on a strikeout.

DeGroat though would allow Dayton homer number four, after a pitch clock violation set up a walk which put a runner on for JV Martinez who went yard. Alaska Abney threw two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth.

The Captains offense from the fifth through the ninth inning, was held too only two baserunners, a Joe Naranjo walk in the eighth and a Halpin base on balls in the ninth.

Game six of the seven game road series in downtown Dayton is tomorrow Saturday June 25. First Pitch is at 7:09 p.m.
