Off another strong performance from the pitching staff, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans took their third game in a row over the Fayetteville Woodpeckers 7-2 on Saturday night. With a 3-2 lead in the series, the Pelicans’ record improved to 58-28 and 11-9 in the second half. The Woodpeckers dropped to 37-47 with a 6-13 second-half record.
It was the second-highest strikeout total of the season for the Myrtle Beach pitching staff as four pitchers combined for 19 strikeouts. Starter Porter Hodge collected a career-high 10 through four shutout innings. Yovanny Cabrera (1-1) got the win with one earned run and five strikeouts through his 2 2/3 innings. Angel Gonzalez struck out one with an earned run off two hits in one inning of work and Chase Watkins earned the save with three strikeouts over his 1 1/3 innings.
Juan Mora (2-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R, BB) led the Pelicans’ lineup with a pair of doubles and three runs driven in. Kevin Made (2-5, RBI, R) also posted a multi-hit game with James Triantos (1-4, R, BB) creating some excitement by stealing home in the bottom of the seventh.
Saturday’s loss went to Carlos Calderon (2-4) with three earned runs in the second inning. Calderon walked five and allowed five hits in his 3 2/3 innings of work. Jacob DeLabio also allowed three earned runs in the bottom of the eighth off three hits and a walk.
With three of the five Woodpeckers’ hits, Miguel Palma (3-4, HR, 2 2B, 2 RBI) was the main power source after driving in both runs for Fayetteville. Seven Woodpeckers would post multi-strikeout games in the loss.
Myrtle Beach set the tone early with a three-run bottom of the second. With the bases loaded, Mora grounded out to second base for an RBI force out as Jacob Wetzel scored the first run. The bases loaded back up for Kevin Alcantara to hit an infield single up the middle that was fielded by second baseman Joey Loperfido to score another run. Kevin Made would later score on a balk to make it 3-0 after two innings.
Another run wouldn’t come until the top of the sixth on Palma’s solo home run to left field. It was his sixth of the season and made it a 3-1 Pelicans lead.
The bases were loaded once again for the Pelicans in the bottom of the seventh with Triantos on third. Following a pitch to Wetzel, Triantos broke for home on pitcher Alex Santos and scored when the ball popped out of Palma’s glove behind the plate for a stolen base.
