Bisons Come Back to Defeat Red Wings in Extras on a Walk-Off Walk

Bisons Upended by Rochester in Series Finale

July 23, 2022 – International League (IL)Buffalo Bisons News Release

BUFFALO, NY – Despite being down by six runs at one point, the Buffalo Bisons came back to defeat the Rochester Red Wings 10-9 in 10 innings on Saturday night from Sahlen Field, with the winning run coming courtesy of a walk-off walk.

Thomas Hatch made the start for the Herd and was roughed up for eight runs over 4.2 innings. The Red Wings scored two in the first, one in the second, and three in the third off two doubles, a triple, and four singles.

The Bisons mounted a comeback however, scoring five runs in the fourth thanks to a two-run double by Nathan Lukes, followed by RBI knocks by Chavez Young and Tanner Morris to cut the lead to one.

Rochester wasted no time extended their lead once again, however, as they scored two more runs in the fifth off Nick Allgeyer (though both runs were charged to Hatch) to go up 8-5. Allgeyer ultimately got Joey Meneses to strike out with the bases loaded to stop the bleeding.

Three straight walks to the Bisons’ 9-1-2 hitters brought Gabriel Moreno to the plate with the bases loaded and nobody out in the seventh, when Moreno delivered a two-run single to bring the Bisons within one.

Spencer Horwitz then tied the game when a wild pitch allowed him to score, before Jordan Groshans singled home Moreno to give the Bisons a 9-8 lead, their first of the night.

Eric Yardley had a scoreless eighth, setting up Joe Biagini for the ninth. After giving up a leadoff single who advanced to second on a groundout, Donovan Casey delivered an RBI single to tie things up with one away. The Herd then went down in order in the bottom of the ninth, sending things to extras knotted up at nine.

Biagini stayed on and had a perfect 10th to keep things tied, before Patrick Murphy loaded the bases with two away and the winning run 90 feet away. With Cullen Large at the plate and the count full, Murphy’s payoff pitch was low for ball four, allowing LJ Talley to cross home and win it on a walk-off walk.

The Bisons will go for the sweep against Rochester tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch set for 1:05 p.m. EST.
