ERIE, Pa. – Aaron Shackelford smashed his 26th home run of the season, moving him into sole possession of second place all-time in single-season home runs in Curve history as the Curve defeated Erie, 13-6, to clinch the series at UPMC Park Saturday afternoon.
The Curve scored 13 runs on 14 hits to win their fourth game of the week over Erie. Shackelford’s home run came in fifth inning, a three-run shot off Erie reliever Tim Holdgrafer. It broke a tie with Josh Bonifay for the second-most home runs in a single-season for Altoona, trailing Adam Hyzdu’s 31 in 2000.
Altoona scored four runs in the top of the first inning off Wilmer Flores. After two quick outs, Endy Rodriguez drew a walk and Henry Davis hit a single. Malcom Nuñez followed with a two-run double, before Connor Scott added an RBI-double and Shackelford an RBI-single.
The Curve followed the four-run first with four more runs in the second. Flores loaded the bases with two hits and a hit-by-pitch before he was pulled from the game for Gerson Moreno. In the next at-bat, Endy Rodriguez hit a two-run double. Nick Gonzales scored on a wild pitch two batters later and Scott scored Rodriguez with a sacrifice fly.
Gonzales added two separate RBI-doubles later in the game, scoring Peguero in the fifth and seventh innings. He finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI. Nuñez went 3-for-4 with two RBI, his second-straight three-hit game for the Curve. Shackelford finished with four RBI and two hits.
Carmen Mlodzinski allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings with two walks and six strikeouts to earn the win. Erie scored twice off the Altoona bullpen, with Nick Dombkowski allowing an unearned run on two hits in two innings and Austin Roberts allowing one run on one hit.
Altoona finishes a six-game series with the Erie SeaWolves, Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m., with RHP Chance Kirby on the mound for Erie and Altoona sending RHP Aaron Shortridge for the start.
