Duran Doubles in Two, Steals Home in Comeback Win at SWB

Wong, Downs Go Deep in 6-4 Loss to Syracuse

September 15, 2022 – International League (IL)Worcester Red Sox News Release

MOOSIC, P.A. – The Worcester Red Sox (70-67) erased an early deficit to beat the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (75-62) on Thursday night, a 5-3 victory at PNC Field.

It was a 2-2 game in the seventh, a frame that began with a walk and a hit-by-pitch. After a strikeout, Jarren Duran stepped up and clocked a two-run double down the left field line to give the WooSox their first lead. Duran reached third on the play after a throwing error, then proceeded to steal home between pitches on a toss back to the pitcher to cap off the three-run rally.

Since the start of September, Duran has three doubles, one triple and a home run for Worcester. The steal of home marked his first since returning to Triple-A in August.

On the mound, WooSox starter Victor Santos went six innings for the second time in his young Triple-A career, striking out eight and allowing two runs. SWB pushed across its two on a Ryan LaMarre RBI single in the first and a Chad Bell run-scoring double in the second.

Santos, who retired the final 11 batters he faced, has struck out 26 over his last 21 innings of work.

Trailing 2-0 in the fifth, Worcester put two on with one out against Yankees rehabber Luis Severino. Nick Sogard was next and ripped a single to right-Ryan Fitzgerald scored from second on the hit, and after the throw from the outfield was dropped, Pedro Castellanos came home to tie the game.

That was the final pitch thrown by Severino, who finished the night with the following line: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K.

Santos exited in line for the win thanks to Worcester’s three spot in the seventh. In relief, Caleb Simpson allowed one run over two innings on an eighth inning RBI groundout from Chris Owings, and A.J. Politi finished the night by striking out the side in the ninth.

The WooSox continue the six-game series on the road Friday at 6:35 p.m. against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, affiliate of the New York Yankees. On the mound, Chris Murphy (3-5, 5.62) faces Jhony Brito (6-2, 3.18). Radio coverage is live at 6:15 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network.
