Team Sandy Wins Game One Of Fall Wolrd Series In Walk-Off Style

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Senior Mex Riemer walked off game one of UNC’s Fall World Series with a two-out, three-run homer to right field that gave Team Sandy a 9-8 win over Team Pry in the best-of-three series Tuesday afternoon.

With the victory, Team Sandy leads the series 1-0.

Reece Holbrook led off the inning with a single through the right side that plated Carter French, who started the inning at second base. Austin Hawke then reached on fielder’s choice that retired Holbrook but allowed Hunter Stokely to move over to third before pitcher Nik Pry struck out Vance Honeycutt to set the stage for Riemer.

Team Pry scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to break the 5-5 tie with Mac Horvath driving home two runs with a double and Alberto Osuna plating Horvath with a sacrifice fly.

Team Pry led the game 4-1 after Tomas Frick’s three-run homer in the third inning.

Team Sandy began its comeback in the bottom  of the third when Joe Jaconski singled up the middle to drive home two runs. Stokely tied the game the following inning with a home run off the scoreboard in left field.

French’s RBI-ground out in the fifth put Team Sandy ahead for the first time, but the lead was short-lived as Frick hit his second home run of the game in the sixth to tie the score, 5-5.

Team Sandy threatened to retake the lead in the bottom of the sixth, but Pry induced a pop-up and ground ball to get out of the inning with runners at second and third.

He struck out the side in the seventh to move the scheduled seven-inning affair into extra innings.

Frick finished the game 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, four RBIs and two runs scored. Horvath also collected three hits and drove in three runs for Team Pry.

Honeycutt went 2-for-3 with a home run, two walks, and a stolen base for Team Sandy. Holbrook, Riemer, and Stokely also collected two hits each for the victors.

Team Sandy starting pitcher Jake Knapp tossed 4.1 innings and allowed four runs on three hits before giving way to freshman Matthew Matthijs, who pitched the final 3.2 innings to earn the victory.

Junior Max Carlson started on the mound for Team Pry and threw 3.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits with two strikeouts. Vanderbilt transfer Nelson Berkwich pitched the next two innings and Pry finished the game.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct.5, at 2:30 p.m. inside Boshamer Stadium.
