When asked about the Mets’ top free agent, Jacob deGrom, Canha said “it would mean a lot” for the two-time Cy Young Award winner to re-sign with the Mets and continue his legacy in New York.
“I mean it would be great,” Canha said. “You’d love to have a guy like Jake on the rotation. I have no idea what’s going to happen with that, I honestly have no idea but I hope we get him, it would mean a lot.”
Canha was also asked how important it would be for fellow OF Brandon Nimmo to stay in New York long-term. The Mets are interested in bringing Nimmo back next season, but he has already started to meet personally with other interested teams.
“I mean he’s a phenomenal talent,” Canha said. “I really appreciate him as a teammate and as a person. He’s a great center fielder, great leadoff guy. I wish the best for him, but selfishly I would like him back.”
Canha then touched on the team re-signing star closer Edwin Diaz, and said that he’s always checking in on the offseason rumors and reports surrounding the club.
“Yeah that was great to see,” Canha said. “It’s always a very exciting time of year this year with the GM Meetings, the owner’s meetings, and then the Winter Meetings coming up. Yeah, I’d be lying if I said I don’t pay close attention to it. You’re always checking, who are we gonna, what’s gonna happen today. It’s a very exciting time.”
