Jorge Alfaro to Red Sox on Minor League deal

The Red Sox have agreed to a Minor League deal with catcher Jorge Alfaro, a source told MLB.com’s Ian Browne.

The Red Sox, who have not confirmed the deal, would reportedly pay Alfaro $2 million if he is added to the Major League roster. The agreement would also include two opt-outs on June 1 and July 1 if he is not in the Majors on either date.

The addition of Alfaro provides insurance to a thin area of the Red Sox roster, as Boston has just two catchers on its 40-man, with Reese McGuire anticipated to receive the majority of playing time in 2023. Alfaro would likely be in competition with Connor Wong for the backup position come Spring Training.

Alfaro, who was non-tendered by the Padres in November, appeared in 82 games in 2022, hitting .246/.285/.383 with seven home runs and 40 RBIs.
