Two Tigers are already making waves ahead of Clemson softball’s fourth ever season under head coach John Rittman.
In Extra Inning Softball’s preseason pitcher power rankings, which were released on Tuesday, both ace Valerie Cagle and left-hander Millie Thompson were ranked No. 5 and No. 19 respectively. Cagle was also named the No. 1 two-way player in collegiate softball ahead of the 2023 season by Extra Inning Softball.
Cagle enters her fourth season with the Tigers after an impressive 2022 campaign both in the circle and at the plate. The Virginia native recorded a 1.92 ERA and a staggering 176 strikeouts en route to a 16-9 record in 59 game appearances and 26 starts. At the plate, Cagle tallied 34 runs off of 57 hits, 44 RBIs, 13 homers, 10 doubles and one triple.
Thompson enters the spring after a breakout sophomore season in the circle for the Tigers. The lone left-handed pitcher on Clemson’s roster recorded a 1.58 ERA and a 15-4 record in 28 game appearances, 19 starts and 119.1 innings pitched. Thompson was a third-team All-ACC selection and led the ACC in strikeout to walk ratio with 6.11 as well as in fewest walks allowed per seven innings with 1.06 in 2022.
Clemson opens up the 2023 season on Thursday, Feb. 9 in Miami, Fla. at the FIU Invitational with first pitch scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
