Trio of Hawkeyes earn Perfect Game preseason honors

After a solid campaign had Iowa (36-19, 17-7 Big Ten) right on the outside of the 2022 NCAA Division I baseball tournament looking in, it appears the Hawkeyes are returning plenty of firepower.

Iowa’s Ty Langenberg, Keaton Anthony and Brody Brecht were all recognized by Perfect Game. Perfect Game honored junior righty Langenberg as its preseason Pitcher of the Year, Anthony as one of its preseason All-Conference outfielders and Brecht as the Big Ten’s top rated 2024 MLB draft prospect.

Langenberg was also a preseason All-Conference selection. Here’s what Perfect Game’s Brian Sakowski wrote about Langenberg.

Huge Cape performance, likely top 3 rounder, full mix with feel and moxie, can dominate. – Sakowski, Perfect Game.

Langenberg went 7-2 with a 3.71 ERA last season with 74 strikeouts as Iowa’s Sunday starter. The Urbandale, Iowa, native has thrown 73 1/3 innings and started 12 games with 22 appearances in his career.

Meanwhile, Anthony was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and a freshman All-American a season ago. The Hoschton, Ga., native hit .361 with 22 doubles, 14 home runs, 55 RBIs and 46 runs scored. He hit safely in 44 games, reached safely in 50 contests and had a team-best 22 multi-hit games. Anthony threw two hitless innings against Cornell College, striking out four in his only pitching appearance as a freshman.

Two-way player with big power in bat, huge performance in ’22, will DH/weekend rotation in ’23. – Sakowski, Perfect Game.

The rest of Perfect Game’s preseason All-Big Ten team looked like this: Maryland catcher Luke Shliger, Rutgers first baseman Christopher Brito, Maryland middle infielder Matt Shaw, Michigan State middle infielder Mitch Jebb, Indiana third baseman Josh Pyne, Nebraska infielder Max Anderson, Rutgers outfielder Ryan Lasko, Indiana outfielder Carter Mathison, Ohio State outfielder Kade Kern, Ohio State designated hitter Trey Lipsey, Illinois and utility Cam McDonald.

Perfect Game’s other preseason All-Conference pitchers included Maryland’s Jason Savacool, Ohio State’s Isaiah Coupet, Nebraska’s Emmett Olson and Minnesota’s George Klassen.

Iowa opens its season on Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. CT from Post Charlotte, Fla., in the Snowbird NCAA Baseball Classic against Indiana State. The Hawkeyes also have games the following two days against Quinnipiac and Indiana State.

Then, it’s off to the Karbach Round Rock Classic from Feb. 24-26 with games against Sam Houston State, LSU and Kansas State….
