Keaton Anthony named preseason second-team All-American

After a breakout season last year, redshirt sophomore Keaton Anthony is on the national radar.

Anthony was named a preseason second-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Anthony earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year and was named a freshman All-American a season ago after batting .361 with 22 doubles, 14 home runs, 55 RBIs and 46 runs scored.

The Hoschton, Ga., native’s 73 hits, 22 doubles, his batting average, RBIs and home runs all led the Hawkeyes in 2022. He also finished second on the team in runs scored, trailing only Peyton Williams. Anthony was also named as one of Perfect Game’s All-Conference outfielders.

The Hoschton, Georgia, native hit safely in 44 games, reached safely in 50 contests and had a team-best 22 multi-hit games. Anthony threw two hitless innings against Cornell College, striking out four in his only pitching appearance as a freshman.

He joins right-handers Ty Langenberg and Brody Brecht as Hawkeyes that are garnering preseason recognition.

Junior right-hander Ty Langenberg was chosen as the preseason Big Ten Pitcher of the Year by both Perfect Game and D1Baseball.

Langenberg was a force as a sophomore last year for the Hawkeyes as the co-leader in wins with seven. Langenberg went 7-2 in 14 appearances (12 starts) with 63 total innings pitched. He recorded a 3.72 ERA alongside 74 strikeouts.

Baseball America named Brecht as one of its preseason third-team All-America selections. Brecht posted a 3.18 ERA in 17 appearances during his freshman season in Iowa City. The Ankeny, Iowa, native allowed just 13 hits and 16 runs (eight earned) over 22 2/3 innings where he had 44 strikeouts. Brecht surrendered just one extra base hit in his 17 appearances and limited hitters to a .155 average.

Iowa opens its 2023 season at the Snowbird NCAA Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla., with games Feb. 17-19. The Hawkeyes battle Indiana State on Feb. 17 and 19 at 2 p.m. and 9 a.m. CT. Iowa also plays Quinnipiac at 10 a.m. on Feb. 18.
