DURHAM – Former Blue Devils outfielder/right-handed pitcher Marcus Stroman and infielder/right-handed pitcher Matt Mervis were selected to World Baseball Classic rosters on Thursday, as announced by their respective clubs.
Stroman, a native of Medford, N.Y., will represent Puerto Rico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. The 2017 Team USA MVP, posted a 2.35 ERA in three starts for the United States and dominated Puerto Rico during the championship game, allowing just one hit in six innings.

Mervis, a native of Potomac, Md., will represent Israel in 2023, after an impressive run through the Chicago Cubs minor league system in 2022. Mervis finished his rise through the minors hitting .309 with 40 doubles, 36 home runs and 119 RBI. Those numbers rivaled Pete Alonso’s 2018 season, where he hit .285, 31 doubles, 36 home runs and 119 RBI.
Puerto Rico and Israel will play in Pool D at loanDepot Park in Miami, Fla., from March 11-15. Pool D consists of the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Israel, Nicaragua and Puerto Rico.
