Game two of the series will be Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Junior right-handed pitcher Jake Knapp will be on the mound in game one, while freshman left-handed pitcher Kyle Percival will get the start in game two.
Knapp and Percival each made their first starts for UNC last week and both posted their first win. Knapp pitched 5.2 scoreless innings against Longwood, while Percival struck out six in five innings against Radford.
The Diamond Heels are looking to bounce back a pair of 6-5 losses to East Carolina over the weekend. UNC held a three-run lead in the late stages of each game but was unable to put the Pirates away.
“I’m just a firm believer that you get better by playing really good teams, even if it hurts a little bit,” UNC head coach Scott Forbes said. “Even some sweeps we’ve had here at North Carolina; a lot of those teams went to Omaha. You can be mad about it and pout about it, or you can say, ‘OK, it’s going to make us better,’ and I firmly believe this weekend will make us better.”
VCU (2-4) was swept at home by Sacred Heart over weekend after winning two of three at the Baseball at the Beach tournament with wins over Fairfield and Coastal Carolina.
Last season, the Tar Heels took two of three from the Rams to win the 2022 NCAA Chapel Hill Regional. VCU defeated UNC in the winner’s bracket game, but Carolina responded with two wins on elimination day including a 19-8 win to force a deciding game seven.
The Tar Heels jumped out to a 4-1 lead in championship game and posted a 7-3 victory to advance to the Super Regional.
North Carolina leads the all-time series 23-8, including a 21-6 mark in games played in Chapel Hill.
