Cal Rolls Past No. 2 UCLA

UCLA

BERKELEY – Five third-inning runs and a walk-off home run off the bat of Kacey Zobac led California to an 8-0, run-rule, victory over No. 2 UCLA in game two of the series on Saturday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field.

The win over the Bruins is the first for Cal since it defeated No. 19/21 UCLA, 5-1, on April 13, 2013 in Los Angeles.

The Bears (18-5, 1-1 Pac-12) got a 3-for-3 day with two RBI from Tatum Anzaldo, along with a two-run Makena Smith homer and Sona Halajian went 5.0 innings with just four hits allowed in the circle.

Scoreless through two, the Bears broke through in a big way in the third. D’Asha Saiki led off the inning with a double, forcing UCLA to take starter Taylor Tinsley out of the game for Megan Faraimo, who came into Saturday tied for the NCAA-lead with 11 wins. Kennedy Thomas gave Cal the lead right away with an RBI single, the first of four-straight hits off of the UCLA ace.

Anzaldo doubled to put two runners in scoring position for Mika Lee, who extended her hitting streak to 10 games with a two-run single up the middle and a 3-0 Cal lead. The Bears broke it open from there with the Smith two-run shot to right, forcing UCLA to relieve Faraimo after just five batters faced.

Cal added two more in the fourth on Anzaldo’s first home run of the season, a tailing shot off the foul pole in right and Zobac ended it in the fifth with Cal’s third long ball of the day and second off Bruin reliever Lauren Shaw.
