Tide defeat Columbia in Game 2 of series

The Alabama baseball team suffered its first loss of the season last night to Columbia. On Saturday, the Tide returned to the Joe and took Game 1 of the day 6-2.

Alabama was led offensively by graduate-senior Ed Johnson and freshman Colby Shelton.

Shelton went 1-for-5 at the plate while hitting a two-run home run in the fifth inning. He has hit ten home runs so far this season.

Johnson contributed in the fifth inning with a home run of his own. The Tennessee Tech transfer hit a grand slam to put the Tide ahead 6-1.

In the end, the Tide’s pitching was enough to pick up the win. Sophomore Ben Hess picked up the win on the mound. Hess threw five innings allowing just one run on three hits. He also struck out seven batters.

In relief, freshman Riley Quick contributed on the mound as well. Quick threw three innings allowing one run and striking out five batters.

Alabama improved to 15-1 while the Lions fell to 3-6 on the season.

Game 3 of the series was moved to Saturday with the potential for bad weather in the area on Sunday.
