AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The University of Chicago softball team picked up victories over Nichols College 6-1 and SUNY New Paltz 3-2 in Florida on Monday.
The Maroons improved to 2-2 on the season.
UChicago 6, Nichols 1
UChicago got on the scoreboard right away in the bottom of the first inning when Olivia Cataldo produced an RBI sacrifice fly. Clare Fortier then singled in another run to double the lead in the fourth inning.
Four insurance tallies crossed home plate in the sixth. Fortier led off with a double and then scored on a passed ball. Laila Sims knocked in one with a single through the left side and Julia Folkl plated two with a single to right center.
Nichols got its sole run in the top of the seventh off starting pitcher Paige Heffke (1-1 record). The Maroon sophomore posted a complete-game effort with seven strikeouts, two hits and one walk.
UChicago finished with 11 hits and one error in the box score. The Maroons received two hits each for Folkl, Sims, Fortier, Nicole Wong and Alina Yazek.
UChicago 3, SUNY New Paltz 2
Game two saw the Maroons maintain the momentum from game one. They scored twice in the top of the third inning, with one coming in on a passed ball while Folkl drove in the other on a single.
An important insurance run crossed the plate in the top of the fifth thanks to three singles and an error to make it 3-0. SUNY New Paltz struck back with two of their own in the bottom of the frame to draw within one. However, relief pitcher Delaney Romanchick struck out five of the final seven batters to preserve the win.
Starting pitcher Delaney Choi fanned seven batters in 5.1 innings of work to get the victory. Romanchick got the save while striking out six over the final 1.2 innings.
The Maroons tallied eight hits, with two hits each by Sims and Folkl.
