Maroon Softball Beats Endicott, Falls to Edgewood


WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The University of Chicago softball team split its Tuesday games in Florida, defeating Endicott College 2-1 and losing to Edgewood College 4-3.

The Maroons evened their record at 3-3 on the year.


UChicago 2, Endicott 1   (9 innings)

Game one was a pitcher’s duel throughout as both starters went into extra innings. UChicago’s Paige Heffke and Endicott’s Jaylin Couto tossed nine innings each and combined for 21 strikeouts.

The opening seven innings were scoreless for both sides. UChicago was first on the board with Julia Folkl‘s RBI double in the top of the eighth, but Endicott tied it right back up in the bottom of the frame.

Then in the ninth, Alina Yazek lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to make it 2-1. Heffke clinched the win in the bottom of the inning with one strikeout and two groundouts to strand the tying run on third base.

UChicago posted four hits and one error. Folkl batted 2-for-3 with one RBI and one walk.

Heffke (2-1 record) struck out 10 batters with seven hits, one unearned run and two walks.


Edgewood 4, UChicago 3

Game two was a back-and-forth battle as Edgewood and UChicago traded single runs in the middle innings. The Eagles scored in the second, third, fourth and fifth frames. The Maroons countered with one in the second, fourth and fifth. Olivia Cataldo knocked an RBI single, Paige Zvokel posted an RBI groundout and Laila Sims slammed an RBI triple.

Starting pitcher Delaney Romanchick (0-2 record) threw the opening three innings, allowing two runs. Delaney Choi (one earned run) tossed one inning and Nicole Wong closed out the final three innings.

The Maroons concluded with nine hits, including a 2-for-2 batting line for Madeline Murphy.
