RALEIGH – The NC State baseball team fell 14-6 to Elon Tuesday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park.
Elon (10-7, 2-1 CAA) scored five runs in the top of the first to take a 5-0 lead. The Phoenix scored its first run on a wild pitch before Ryan Sprock hit a three-run homer to left center to make it 4-0. A bases-loaded walk then extended the lead to 5-0 following the top of the first.
The Phoenix doubled its lead in the second with five more runs, stretching its lead to 10-0 when Justin Cassella hit a grand slam to left field.
Will Marcy hit a solo homer in the bottom of the third to get the Wolfpack on the board. Marcy was one of three members of the Pack to add home runs on Tuesday with Noah Soles and Parker Nolan firing back-to-back solo shots in NC State’s two-run fifth inning.
NC State (14-3, 1-2 ACC) posted two multi-run innings despite the loss, scoring three runs in the fourth frame behind a two-RBI single from LuJames Groover III and an RBI single from Trevor Candelaria while later adding two more runs in the fifth.
The Wolfpack stranded 10 runners on the afternoon. Candelaria, Soles and Carter Trice recorded multiple hits for the Pack on Tuesday.
Jacob Halford took the loss for NC State and now sits at 0-1 on the season, while Elon’s Spencer Bauer improved to 1-0 on the season after two innings of scoreless relief…
