The 2023 World Baseball Classic is in full swing, and pool play wraps up Wednesday with three pivotal games on the schedule. Team USA is one win away from the quarterfinals and can advance to the knockout round if the squad beats Colombia on Wednesday night in Phoenix. Elsewhere in Pool C, Mexico faces Canada in the afternoon with the winner of that game also advancing in the bracket. In Pool D, Venezuela has clinched a quarterfinal spot, and the other one will be determined by the winner of Puerto Rico vs. Dominican Republic in Miami.
The quarterfinals kicked off Wednesday on the other side of the bracket with Cuba edging Australia, 4-3. The Cubans are headed to the semifinals in Miami, while the rest of the knockout round field will be set on Wednesday. Once the field is fully set, the tournament becomes a single-elimination bracket culminating with the final on Tuesday, March 21.
This version of the WBC was originally supposed to be played in 2021 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Action got started on Wednesday, March 8 (technically first pitch of the 2023 WBC opener in Taiwan took place at 11 p.m. ET on March 7), and there will be a total of 47 games. The championship game is set for Tuesday, March 21 in Miami.
Plenty of MLB stars are taking part in the event, including Shohei Ohtani, Juan Soto, Julio Rodríguez, Francisco Lindor, Mike Trout and Trea Turner. Full team rosters can be viewed here, and here’s a primer on the event from CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa. Here are Matt Snyder’s Power Rankings for the tournament.
