PULLMAN, Wash. (March 15, 2023) – Washington State dropped a 14-8 nonconference contest to San Francisco at Bailey-Brayton Field Wednesday afternoon.
The Cougars (13-3) collected 11 hits and took an 8-3 lead into the seventh inning before San Francisco erupted for nine runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to earn the win and improve to 9-4 overall. The Dons finished with 15 hits.
Five Cougars collected two hits as Jacob McKeon doubled twice while Sam Brown and Elijah Hainline hit back-to-back home runs. Lefthander Spencer Jones made its first WSU start and was impressive, allowing one earned run on three hits with six strikeouts in five innings.
KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
In the first, McKeon drove a 3-0 pitch the other way to right-centerfield for an RBI-double that scored Jonah Advincula from second after his leadoff infield single. USF took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs on two Cougar errors in the third inning.
WSU answered in a big way in their half of the third with five runs after back-to-back home runs from Brown and Hainline, a Nate Swarts RBI-triple and Kyle Russell followed with a squeeze bunt to score Swarts for a 5-2 lead.
The Cougars added a run in the fourth after McKeon doubled high off the centerfield wall and later scored on a San Francisco wild pitch. An inning later, Cam Magee beat out an infield single to shortstop with two outs, allowing Greg Fuchs to score for an 8-2 lead.
