The Yankees fell to the Philadelphia Phillies 9-8 on Wednesday afternoon.

Here are some key takeaways…

– It was a start to forget for Luis Severino. After walking the first two batters he faced, Severino allowed a Nick Castellanos RBI single and then loaded the bases before being pulled from the game. Carlos Gomez came out of the pen and scuffled, and the Phillies ended up batting around and putting seven first-inning runs on the board.

– Severino re-entered the game to start the second inning (something you can only see during spring training), and he walked another batter but got out of the inning unscathed. In all, Severino was charged with four earned runs on just two hits with three walks and four strikeouts over 2.1 innings.

– The Yankees first run of the day came in the first inning, when Aaron Judge and Oswaldo Cabrera hit back-to-back doubles. Judge is hitting a cool .467 this spring after going 1-for-2 with a walk on the afternoon.

Anthony Volpe was on base three times with two walks, a hit, and an RBI, and he made a couple of great defensive plays at short. In the second, he fielded a ball that caromed off of Severino with his bare hand and made an accurate throw to first for the out. Then, in the sixth, Volpe ranged deep to his right and made a perfect throw to first base to make the play.

– Down six runs for most of the game, the Yankees pushed across four runs in the bottom of the sixth, including a two-strike RBI single from Volpe, to make it a two-run game. Wilmer Difo struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

– The Bombers struck for three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, thanks in part to a ball lost in the sun and some shaky Phillies defense, to take the lead. But the Phillies answered to re-take the lead in the top of the ninth.
