Scholar Athlete of the Week | Kelly Ryono

Kelly Ryono helped the Fighting Illini to a 4-1 mark at the USF Tournament March 10-12 in Tampa, Fla. The Illini posted three shutout victories over Florida Gulf Coast, South Florida, and Saint Francis, while adding a 7-5 win over Marist. The team’s only setback was a narrow 2-1 defeat in the team’s second matchup of the weekend against host USF.

In the Illini’s 9-0 shutout of Florida Gulf Coast on Friday morning, Ryono led the Orange and Blue’s offensive surge by going 3-for-4 with a triple, a home run, three RBI and three runs scored. That evening, in the Illini’s 4-0 win over South Florida, Ryono once again went 3-for-4 at the plate to finish Friday with a combined 6-for-8. On Saturday vs. Marist, Ryono went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, followed by another 1-for-3 performance in the rematch vs. USF. She closed the week Sunday with one RBI in the Illini’s win over SFU.  

For the weekend Ryono, a senior outfielder from Huntington Beach, Calif., hit .471 (8-for-17), with five runs scored and five RBI. She is studying kinesiology at Illinois.
