LOS ANGELES – Jordan Woolery went 3-for-4 with a double in the No. 3 UCLA softball team’s 4-3 loss to No. 10 Washington at Easton Stadium Friday night.
Woolery’s double off the right field wall came with two outs in the seventh inning to put the tying run in scoring position, but a Megan Grant strikeout to end the game silenced the Bruins’ (25-3, 2-2 Pac-12) rally.
A three-run sixth inning for the Huskies (22-4, 3-1 Pac-12) capped by a Baylee Klingler home run off left-handed pitcher Brooke Yanez gave Washington the lead for the remainder of the game. UCLA scratched two runs across in the bottom half of the sixth with two RBI base hits by Rachel Cid and Anna Vines to make it a one-run game, 4-3.
Catcher Sharlize Palacios scored the Bruins’ other run with a line drive that tipped the mitt of Klingler at first base.
Until the sixth inning, Yanez was steady, working out of multiple jams. In the first, Yanez stranded two runners with a strikeout and a lineout to Maya Brady at shortstop. She stranded two more in the second inning. In the fourth inning, Yanez induced back-to-back weak ground outs and allowed just one unearned run to score.
Yanez’s record moves to 9-1 with her first loss of the season. She struck out three batters…
