Ducks Drop Extra Inning Game

Stanford

EUGENE, Ore. – No. 20 Oregon received a strong pitching performance from Stevie Hansen, but mistakes on the bases proved costly in a 3-1 loss in eight innings to No. 7 Stanford Friday in front of 1,659 at Jane Sanders Stadium. It was the 2023 home opener for the Ducks who played their first 25 games of the season away from Eugene.

“We were battling, we went to extra innings,” said head coach Melyssa Lombardi. “It’s just about being complete and finishing it. We needed to finish it.”

How it Happened: The Cardinal (23-2, 1-0) got a run in the first inning when leadoff batter Taylor Gindlesperger tripled and came home on a sacrifice fly.

The Ducks (18-7, 1-4) put runners on second and third with one out in the second inning, but ran themselves out of a scoring opportunity when Hanna Delgado and Ariel Carlson were doubled up trying to advance on Tehya Bird’s fielder’s choice.

Oregon tied the game up in the third when Terra McGowan scored from first on Allee Bunker’s double to deep left center. It was Bunker’s 43rd career double. That moved her past Janie Takeda Reed (42/2012-15) for second on the UO career doubles list. Bunker now trails only all-time leader Jenna Lilley (2015-18), who had 52 career doubles.
