Maroon Softball Beats St. Norbert and Ripon in Spring Break Finale

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The University of Chicago softball team wrapped up its spring break trip to Florida with a pair of wins against St. Norbert College and Ripon College on Friday.

The Maroons improved their season record to 6-4.

UChicago 8, St. Norbert 0  (5 innings)

The Maroons dominated the opening game on both sides of the ball. Starting pitcher Delaney Choi twirled a spotless five innings as she only allowed one base runner. The junior improved her season record to 3-0 while striking out two in the shutout effort.

UChicago’s offense did its part to end the game early via run rule. Single-run tallies arrived in the bottom of the first and third innings, thanks to a wild pitch and an RBI groundout by Nicole Wong. The Maroons broke out in a big way in the bottom of the fourth by increasing their lead to 6-0. Anna Jensen posted an RBI single and Laila Sims followed up immediately with a three-run homer.

The game’s final runs came in the bottom of the fifth with RBI singles from Paige Zvokel and Ava Sinai.

UChicago posted 10 hits and three stolen bases in the contest. Jensen and Olivia Cataldo both batted 2-for-2.

UChicago 4, Ripon 3

In game two, the Maroons jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sims singled, stole second base and then scored on Clare Fortier‘s single. Two batters later, Paige Zvokel knocked an RBI single as well.

The two teams exchanged single runs in the third inning, with Cataldo knocking an RBI single.

UChicago then pushed the advantage to 4-1 in the sixth. Alina Yazek entered the lineup as a pinch hitter and promptly roped a single to score the runner from third base.

Ripon made things tense in the bottom of the sixth, however. A single and a sacrifice fly trimmed the deficit to 4-3. But Maroon starting pitcher Paige Heffke sent the next five batters down in order to preserve the victory.

Heffke moved to 3-2 on the season with the complete game effort. She struck out four with one earned run allowed.

The Maroons collected eight hits and committed three errors. Fortier went 2-for-4 at the dish with an RBI.
