The Mets have claimed right-handed reliever Dennis Santana off waivers from the Minnesota Twins.
Santana, 26, is out of minor league options, meaning he will be a candidate for a spot in the Opening Day bullpen.
With Edwin Diaz out for the season and recent injuries to Bryce Montes de Oca and Sam Coonrod, the Mets have a few spots up for grabs.
Santana features a blazing fastball (it averaged a tick under 97 mph last season) but has had trouble finding consistency in parts of five big league seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers.
He has a career 5.12 ERA (4.15 FIP) and 1.41 WHIP.
In 58.2 innings over 63 games last season for the Rangers, he had a 5.22 ERA (3.35 FIP) and 1.33 WHIP with 54 strikeouts and two home runs allowed.
