No. 23 Wolfpack Walks Off No. 14 Virginia in Series Finale

RALEIGH – The comeback Pack struck again Saturday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park as Cannon Peebles’ two-RBI single lifted the NC State baseball team to a 5-4 comeback victory over No. 14 Virginia.
 
NC State (15-5, 2-4 ACC) entered the top of the ninth with a 2-1 lead before Virginia (17-2, 4-2 ACC) scored three runs behind a pair of home runs to take a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
 
Chase Nixon, who earned his first start of the season Saturday, doubled to right center with one out in the ninth inning to ignite the Wolfpack rally. After Virginia reliever Jake Berry retired the second out of the inning, leadoff batter Kalae Harrison singled up the middle on a 2-2 count to keep the Pack alive and score Nixon from second base, trimming the Pack’s deficit to 4-3.
 
LuJames Groover III then singled to center field to put the tying run at second base before Jacob Cozart worked a five-pitch walk to load the bases with two outs. Michael Gupton entered as a pinch runner for Groover III after Groover III’s two-out single, moving up 90 feet when Cozart earned a free pass to first base.

Peebles then walked it off for the Wolfpack on the first pitch of his at-bat, singling up the middle past the diving reach of Virginia shortstop Griff O’Ferrall to bring home Harrison from third and Gupton from second.
