LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Pitt put up a strong offensive performance but ultimately came up short in a back-and-forth battle against Louisville, 9-6, in its series finale Sunday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium.
The Panthers utilized four pitchers in the circle, led by Dani Drogemuller, who posted seven strikeouts while allowing four runs in 4.1 frames.
Offensively, Pitt racked up eight hits, with two players producing multi-hit efforts. Yvonne Whaley led the team with a 3-for-4 outing, adding three runs in the contest, while Haylie Brunson went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
The Panthers’ offense got started early, jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead following an RBI double by Cami Compson. Louisville answered back in the bottom of the second, taking a 2-1 advantage off a solo home run and RBI single.
Pitt quickly responded in the top of the third as Whaley tied things up after scoring on an errant throw. Sarah Seamans then put the Panthers back on top with an RBI single to center field.
The back-and-forth battle continued in the fourth frame, with the Cardinals using two solo shots to take a 4-3 lead. As they’d done throughout the game, the Panthers answered back immediately, with a two-run blast by Brunson putting the score at 5-4 in favor of the visitors.
Louisville kept attacking offensively, scoring two runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to pull ahead 9-5. The Panthers added one more run in the top of the seventh off an RBI single by Brunson, but ultimately weren’t able to prevail.
