Senior Outfielder Adds Two More Player of the Week Honors

BERKELEY – Senior right fielder Kade Kretzschmar has been named to a pair of weekly national awards. Kretzschmar, the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week, was also named the D1Baseball.com and the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) National Player of the Week.

Kretzschmar led Cal to a 4-1 week that included a road Pac-12 series victory over Utah by slashing .714/.680/1.143 with five extra-base hits – two home runs, three doubles – in 21 at-bats while scoring six runs and driving in 10. The two home runs give him eight of the year, a new career-high. The left-handed slugger went 3-for-3 on Sunday and was a triple shy of the cycle in the series-clinching win over Utah.
The Carlsbad, California, native entered the week hitting .232 and raised his batting average by nearly 100 points to now lead the Bears with a .319 average. He has nine multi-hit games on the season; eight in the month of April. He had five multi-hit games last week, including three three-hit performances. He matched his career high with four hits against Saint Mary’s on Tuesday.

It is the first Pac-12 honor for Kretzschmar. The 2022 Ivy League Player of the Year earned Ivy League Player of the Week honors four times while at Dartmouth. He becomes the first Cal player to earn a national weekly award since Andrew Vaughn was named the Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on April 23, 2018.
