DALLAS – University of Utah sophomore lefty and Sandy, Utah native Micah Ashman has been named to the Midseason Watch List for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award. Now in its 18th season, the award is presented to the top relief pitcher in college baseball.
Ashman is one of seven Pac-12 Conference pitchers to make the list. He has made 20 appearances this season for Utah, all out of the bullpen, and owns a league-leading nine saves to date. His save count ranks 15th in the country and is the most by a Utah pitcher since 2016. Six of Ashman’s nine saves have been longer than an inning, making him a reliable option late in games even when not quite to the ninth.
On the season, his ERA sits at 2.48 over the course of 32.2 innings with opposing hitters held to a .231 batting average. He has struck out 37 batters and walked just five.
Ashman had an absolutely lockdown month of April, posting a 0.69 ERA in his eight appearances and 13 innings pitched. He had 13 strikeouts against only two walks.
Finalists for the award will be announced on June 7 by the NCBWA and the winner will be named on June 16 at the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
