Complete Effort Gets Wildcats Past Anteaters, 4-3

USC

IRVINE, Calif. — The Arizona Wildcats (28-22) pitched, hit, and fielded their way to an impressive 4-3 road win over the UC Irvine Anteaters (32-17) on Monday night at Anteater Ballpark.

Arizona’s pitching was dominant, limiting UC Irvine to just three unearned runs on six hits while striking out a half dozen. Starting pitcher Jackson Kent worked the best outing of his career, going 4.2 innings without factoring into the decision.

Right-handers George Arias Jr. and Anthony Susac, along with southpaw Eric Orloff, combined to hold the Anteaters scoreless on just two hits over the remaining 4.1 innings. Susac (1-0) earned his first win of the year, while Orloff notched his first career save.

Shortstop Mason White swatted his third home run in as many games to lead off the game, putting Arizona up 1-0. After falling behind 3-1 in the fifth the Wildcats responded with an RBI single from third baseman Tony Bullard and an RBI double from first baseman Kiko Romero to even things up in the seventh.

Arizona took the lead for good in the eighth; center fielder Casey Hintz singled with two outs and scored all the way from first on a hit-and-run single executed perfectly by Bullard.
