Five Great Danes Named Academic All-District

GREENWOOD, Ind. – Five Great Danes from the UAlbany softball team were named CSC Academic All-District, the organization announced this week.

The 2022-23 Academic All-District Team, selected by members of College Sports Communicators (CSC) (formerly known as CoSIDA), recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.

The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes softball honorees in four divisions – NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA. Those named to the Academic All-District teams advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. The honorees will be announced in June.

Graduate student Chloe Lewis, senior Caitlyn Mitros, redshirt-sophomore Kate Powers, sophomore Sierra Fretz, and sophomore Caitlyn Frederick have been named Academic All-District.

Starting 39 games at first base, Chloe Lewis led the team and finished third in the conference with 244 putouts. Seeing her first season as a Great Dane starter, Lewis tallied 21 hits, including four doubles and two home runs, with 11 runs and 15 RBI. After graduating in three years with a 3.83 GPA and a degree in business and concentrations in management and finance, she currently holds a 3.93 GPA in her MBA program.

Coming back from an injury during the 2022 season, Caitlyn Mitros has started all 44 games during the 2023 season. Second on the team with a .356 batting average, she finished fourth in the league in both batting average and sacrifice hits. Holding a 3.92 GPA, she recently finished her degree in psychology with minors in education studies and sociology.

One of the Great Danes’ two starting pitchers, Kate Powers finished the season with a 3.03 ERA. Pitching for 97.0 innings, she earned seven complete games, with two shutouts and one no-hitter, in 14 starts and a 10-6 record in the circle. Studying for her degree in biology, she currently holds a 3.89 GPA.

Emerging as UAlbany’s designated player in the latter half of the season, Sierra Fretz started 32 games with 38 game appearances. A two-time America East All-Conference honoree, she tallied 27 hits, including six doubles, one triple, and four home runs, with 11 runs and 20 RBI. With a 3.6 GPA, the sophomore is earning her degree in biochemistry and molecular biology.
