MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin softball team announced a roster addition on Friday, as head coach Yvette Healy shared that Emmy Wells will transfer and play softball for the Badgers beginning in the fall of 2023.
“Emmy Wells will make an immediate impact at Wisconsin with her elite power, hitting 19 home runs her sophomore year,” said Badger head coach Yvette Healy. “Her passion for defense makes her a perfect fit at Wisconsin, too. It’s rare to find a defensive conference player of the year who’s also a huge offensive threat every time she steps to the plate.”
A 6-foot-1 catcher and first baseman from Valparaiso, Ind., Wells transferred to the Badgers after playing two seasons at Northern Iowa. Wells missed the 2023 campaign due to injury, but in 2022, she was named Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Player of the Year and MVC Defensive Player of the Year. This is the first time in MVC history that one player was both Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.
In addition to First Team All-MVC, she was National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) First Team All-Region and an Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete. The Indiana native led the team with 19 home runs, 51 RBI, and had an OPS of 1.281 – .836 slugging percentage and .545 on-base percentage in her sophomore campaign.
As a freshman, Wells earned First Team All-MVC and All-Defensive honors. She recorded 38 hits with 30 RBI, while scoring 22 runs.
