Troy Selected 12th Overall - Stanford University Athletics

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford’s Tommy Troy was selected 12th overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft on Sunday.

Troy is the first Cardinal player to be drafted in the first round since Nico Hoerner was selected 24th overall by the Chicago Cubs in 2018. That year also saw Kris Bubic selected 40th overall by the Kansas City Royals – the last time Stanford had two players taken in the first round.

With Troy’s selection, Stanford has now amassed 34 first-round picks, including 19 since 2000. In addition, Stanford has now had 12 players drafted in the first two rounds of an MLB Draft since 2011.

Troy wrapped up another stellar season as a junior in 2023, helping to lead the Cardinal back to the College World Series for the third straight season. The native of Los Gatos, Calif. batted a team-best .394 with 76 runs scored, 17 doubles, four triples and 17 home runs to accompany 58 RBIs. An All-American according to the ABCA and Perfect Game, Troy won the 2023 Pac-12 batting title after hitting .404 (78-for-193) during the regular season and compiled a team-best 34 multi-hit games while hitting safely in 47 of his 58 games played this year.

The 2023 MLB Draft continues Monday with rounds 3-10. The first selection on day two is set to be made by the Washington Nationals at 11 a.m. PT.
