EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State head softball coach Sharonda McDonald-Kelley announced the addition of catcher Hannah Hawley on Thursday. Hawley joins the Spartans after playing her freshman season at South Carolina.
“Hannah is a lock-down defender behind the plate with an elite arm,” said McDonald-Kelley. “Her experience playing at a high level in the SEC will be an awesome addition to our team on both sides of the ball. Hannah has a bright future ahead of her at Michigan State!”
Hawley appeared in 52 games for the Gamecocks in 2023, starting in 10 for a team that went 40-22 and advanced to a winner-take-all final at NCAA Regionals. South Carolina also finished as runner-up at the 2023 SEC Tournament that saw the team defeat No. 13 Georgia and No. 16 Auburn. Hawley hit .237 in 52 at-bats against some of the top competition in the country, providing her with great experience as she prepares to arrive in East Lansing.
A native of Coventry, Rhode Island, Hawley ranked as the No. 27 overall recruit in the class of 2022 by Extra Inning Softball. Playing at Coventry High School, Hawley was a four-year letterwinner and led her team to a pair of state championships. A two-time First Team All-State selection in 2021 and 2022, Hawley also earned second team honors in 2019 and was named to the All-Academic team in 2022.
Hawley is the ninth newcomer for the Spartans entering 2023-24, joining freshmen Payton Conroy, Jaeya Butler, Ava Mullen and Makayla Huddleston, and incoming transfers Alexis Ross, Olivia Grey, Mik Anthony and Kaelin Cash.
