DURHAM – Duke baseball looks at the 2023 Major League Clubs and their affiliates, as we check in on our Pro Blue Devils across the country.
Former Blue Devils pitching coach Pete Maki helped the Minnesota Twins snap an 18-game losing streak in the playoffs and advance to the ALDS for the first time since 2002. The Twins finished the 2023 regular season with an 87-75 record, posting the sixth-best ERA in baseball at 3.87.
Fellow pitching coach Dusty Blake and the St. Louis Cardinals missed the 2023 postseason with a 71-91 record. The Cardinals posted a 4.79 ERA this past season.
Bryce Jarvis – Arizona Diamondbacks (MLB)
Jarvis made his MLB debut on Aug. 15, 2023, and made the Diamondbacks Wild Card roster earlier this week. The former No. 18 overall pick, posted a 2-1 record in 11 games for Arizona, tallying 23.2 innings of work. He recorded a 3.04 ERA and struck out 12 batters during that span. Jarvis and the Diamondbacks swept the Milwaukee Brewers in the Wild Card Series and will face the Los Angeles Dodgers in a five-game series beginning Oct. 7, at 9:20 p.m.
Marcus Stroman – Chicago Cubs (MLB)
Stroman started 25 of the 27 games he appeared in during the 2023 season, missing out on the postseason by a game. The right-handed pitcher posted a 10-9 record on the mound with a 3.95 ERA in his 136.2 innings of work. He punched out 119 batters and tallied a 1.26 WHIP this season.
Matt Mervis – Chicago Cubs (MLB)
Mervis was the first of two former Duke Blue Devils to make their MLB debut in 2023, starting for the Cubs against the Miami Marlins on May 5, 2023. The former first baseman recorded 15 hits, three home runs and 11 RBI for the Cubs during his stretch on the big-league roster. At Triple-A, Mervis posted a .282 average with 22 home runs and 78 RBI. He tallied a .932 OPS and scored 77 runs.
Jimmy Herron – Albuquerque Isotopes (AAA | Colorado Rockies)
Herron tallied 456 at bats for the Isotopes in 2023, recording a .296 average at the plate. He produced 135 hits, 106 runs, 19 home runs, 83 RBI and 33 stolen bases. The former third round pick posted a .893 OPS and 69 walks.
