STARKVILLE – In the spirit of competition, there had to be a definitive winner in Mississippi State’s annual Fall World Series on Friday evening.
Led by captain Madisyn Kennedy, Team Madi secured a walk-off win against Team Paige via an RBI single from Ella Wesolowski. Moments before she was drenched by a Gatorade bath from her teammates, Kennedy wore a huge smile on her face while talking about her team’s performance.
“I am so proud of my team,” she said. “Listen, I had a lot of confidence in them from the time I drafted them. I was like, ‘Hey, I want these people on my team, and I know they’re going to get the job done,’ and they did just that. I’m so proud of them.”
Team Madi scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Megan Davidson that scored Riley Hull. Aquana Brownlee immediately responded in the top of the third with a solo homer to left field to tie the game for Team Paige. UCLA transfer Lexi Sosa got the start for Kennedy’s team, while Josey Marron started in the circle for Cook’s team. Sosa recorded four strikeouts through 3.0 innings of work, before Aspen Wesley came in to relieve her. Wesley earned the win for Team Madi by striking out a pair in 4.0 innings pitched. Entering her fifth year in Starkville, Wesley cherishes this time spent bonding with her teammates.
“We were all really excited to be out here and play against each other,” Wesley said. “I’m so happy that both teams did really well and all the pitchers did awesome. I’m so proud of this team, and I cannot wait to see what the season looks like.”
The veteran from Philadelphia, Mississippi, has left a long-lasting impact during her time at MSU. With freshman pitchers Hosanna Lindblade and Delainey Everett joining the rotation this season, experienced pitchers like Wesley look to help the newcomers get adjusted in their first year at State. She took Everett aside after the game to offer some words of wisdom to the losing pitcher.
“The two freshmen that are here right now, I enjoy talking to them and of course, they give me so much feedback. They watch me. I watch them, and we just really enjoy learning new pitches,” Wesley said. “[If] they…
