Tigers beat No. 3 Texas, remain nation’s last undefeated

Where Tigers stand in final national rankings

The LSU softball team continued its streak of success in its toughest matchup of the season so far on Tuesday afternoon.

The No. 2 Tigers — the last remaining unbeaten team at the Division I level — welcomed No. 3 Texas to Tiger Park on Tuesday and walked away with a 7-4 win to remain undefeated on the season.

LSU jumped out to a commanding lead, scoring five runs in the first inning thanks to an RBI double from Raeleen Gutierrez followed by a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a three-RBI double from Kelley Lynch.

The Tigers added another run in the second with an RBI single from Ali Newland, but Texas wouldn’t go away. It added a trio of runs in the third and another in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-4.

However, LSU got some insurance at the bottom of the fourth with a Ciara Briggs sac-fly, and Sydney Berzon didn’t allow any more runs as she pitched a complete game and moved to 9-0 on the season after earning the win.

LSU will look to remain undefeated on the year as it welcomes Ole Miss to town for its home-opening SEC series this weekend.
