Late Rally Secures Series Win For Softball Over No. 18 Cal

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah softball team rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 win over the No. 18 California Golden Bears, securing a series win for the Utes on Saturday afternoon in Pac-12 Conference action at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.

This triumph boosts Utah’s mark to 19-15 on the season and 3-9 in conference, while Cal drops to 26-10 overall and 4-8 in league action.

Both starting pitchers were on their game, as Utah’s Raci Miranda and California’s Randi Roelling kept the offenses almost completely in check. The Utes did get on the board in the first thanks to singles from Aliya Belarde and Haley Denning and an error by the visitors before the Bears responded in the second with an unearned run of their own.

In the fourth inning, California seized their first lead of the day, courtesy of back-to-back doubles by Elon Butler and Lagi Quiroga, but Mariah Lopez then entered the circle for Utah and kept her team within a run. She recorded the final out of the fourth, then stranded runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings to hold the home team’s deficit at a run.

Utah found a way to eliminate that margin and leapfrog into the lead in their half of the sixth, which began with a walk to Abby Dayton and a Denning single. After a fielder’s choice put runners at the corners, another fielder’s choice followed by an error sent Dayton across with the tying run. When Julia Jimenez followed with a grounder to second, pinch-runner Sianni Sakai raced home to provide Utah with a 3-2 edge. Lopez ensured that would be the final score by retiring the side in order in the seventh.
