No. 5 Duke Completes Series Sweep Over No. 15 Virgina Tech Saturday

DURHAM – Fifth-ranked Duke (29-3, 10-2 ACC) completed the series sweep over No. 15 Virginia Tech (25-8-1, 9-3 ACC) after collecting a 5-2 victory on Saturday at Duke Softball Stadium.

The Blue Devils outscored the Hokies, 25-12, during the three-game set to mark the program’s first series sweep over Virginia Tech.

Senior Claire Davidson and graduate student Gisele Tapia led the offense in the series finale, both finishing 2-for-3 with one run scored. Davidson also drove in three of Duke’s five runs with a three-run blast in the bottom of the third.  Sophomore Aminah Vega went 1-for-2 with two RBI to round out the Blue Devils’ five runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Blue Devils opened the scoring in the bottom of the first after Vega reached on a fielder’s choice to score Tapia, who led off the frame with a base hit before advancing to second on a Hokies throwing error.
  • Virginia Tech’s Emma Ritter responded in the top of the second with a two-run home run to give the Hokies a 2-1 lead.
  • Sophomore D’Auna Jennings and Tapia opened the bottom of the third with a pair of base hits, before being brought in on Davidson’s three-run shot to right field.
  • Vega followed with a solo blast straight out of center field to stretch the Blue Devils’ gap to 5-2.
  • The next three frames became a pitcher’s duel between sophomore Cassidy Curd and the Hokies’ Emma Lemley. Both sides combined to allow four runners to reach base on a pair of singles and two hit by pitch.
