Softball Completes Sweep at Maine

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes completed their first America East series of 2024 with a three-game sweep after a 4-3 win, Sunday.
 
RECORDS: UAlbany 14-6, 3-0 | Maine 1-24, 0-6 America East
 
SCORE: UAlbany 4, Maine 3
 
KEY STATS

  • Graduate student Morgan Petty led with two doubles for one RBI.
  • Graduate student Caitlyn Mitros hit for a team-high .750 batting average with three singles, including one bunt.
  • Four Great Danes totaled one run each – Mitros, Petty, graduate student Maddi Petrella, and senior Jordan Nastos.
  • Pitchers Wendi Hammond and Kate Powers combined for the win and six strikeouts. Pitching five innings, and getting the start, Hammond earned her 10th win of the season.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Great Danes opened with three consecutive hits – Caitlyn Mitros (single), Morgan Petty (double), and Maddi Petrella (RBI double). 
  • UAlbany held the one-run lead through the second inning.
  • Petrella went 2-2 after she added a single in the top of the third.
  • With the bases loaded, redshirt-junior Victoria Vilarchao drove in Petrella to give the Great Danes a 2-0 advantage.
  • Combining for a single and a double for the second time this game, Mitros ran home from first when Petty hit her second double in the top of the fourth.
  • UAlbany extended its lead to four in the top of the fifth with a run from Jordan Nastos.
  • Maine closed the score gap before the end of the fifth inning with three runs.
  • The Great Danes left two Black Bears on base in the bottom of the seventh to close out…
