No. 2 Duke Downs Charlotte, 6-1, Wednesday

DURHAM – Second-ranked Duke (30-3, 10-2 ACC) used a five-run fifth inning to defeat Charlotte (21-14, 8-4 AAC), 6-1, in a non-conference matchup Wednesday night at Duke Softball Stadium.

The Blue Devils’ offense was led by senior Kelly Torres and sophomore D’Auna Jennings, batting 2-for-3 at the plate with one run. Torres also tallied one RBI during the contest. Senior Claire Davidson and freshman Amiah Burgess also supported Duke’s cause, combining to drive in four of the six runs, while finishing 1-for-2 and 1-for-1, respectively.

Sophomore Cassidy Curd, senior Jala Wright and graduate student Dani Drogemuller saw action in the circle. Curd picked up the win after working 4.1 scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Torres opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with an RBI-single through the left side to score junior Ana Gold. Gold led off the frame with a triple off the right field wall.
  • Charlotte remained close by, holding the Blue Devils to just one run, until Davidson broke open a fifth-inning rally with a two-run shot to left center field.
  • The Blue Devils then loaded the bases on a double, walk and infield single before senior Francesca Frelick sent a sacrifice fly deep into center field to extend Duke’s lead to 4-0.
  • Burgess kept the two-out rally alive with a two-RBI single through the right side to push the Blue Devils ahead, 6-0.
