Walk-Off Winner – California Golden Bears Athletics

Loyola Marymount

BERKELEY – Acacia Anders hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to send the No. 20 California softball team to a 2-1 win over Saint Mary’s on Wednesday at Levine-Fricke Field.

Tatum Anzaldo and Mika Lee added two hits apiece for the Golden Bears (27-10), who improved to 80-2 all-time against the Gaels (19-14).

In what turned out to be a pitcher’s duel throughout the afternoon, Ryann Orange got the start for Cal and was locked in early, striking out the side in the first. She allowed just a single through three frames, before the Bears took their first lead in the home half of the inning.

Lee recorded a bunt single to start the inning and moved to second on a Lagi Quiroga sacrifice bunt, then scored when Anzaldo drove an RBI single up the middle to make it 1-0, Cal.

Orange ran into some trouble in the fourth after she retired the first two Gaels who came to the plate. Two singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases before a walk tied the game as Cal went to Annabel Teperson out of the bullpen. The junior from Novato got a fielder’s choice groundout to end the Saint Mary’s threat.

Randi Roelling came on in relief to start the seventh as the Cal pitching staff allowed just the one run on eight hits for the day, all singles. Saint Mary’s starter Odhi Vazquez went 7.2 innings and was the tough-luck loser as Anders lasered the first pitch she saw over the fence in right center for her seventh long ball of the season.

Roelling notched her 10th win of the year…
