MSU Overtaken Late By Minnesota In Series Finale Sunday

MINNEAPOLIS — Michigan State baseball was overtaken late by Minnesota in the Big Ten Conference weekend series finale Sunday afternoon at Minnesota’s Siebert Field.

Minnesota’s Drew Berkland hit a three-run walk-off home run to cap the Gophers’ comeback and win the series for the home team, after the Spartans had won Friday night’s opener and the Gophers won the second game of the series on Saturday. The series loss snapped the Spartans’ streak of winning their previous three B1G weekend series.

MSU is now 10-11 in B1G action and is 22-25 overall. Minnesota improved to 23-22 overall and 9-12 in conference competition.

Junior outfielder Nick Williams was 3-for-4 with three doubles, scoring two runs and driving in one, while sophomore infielder Randy Seymour was 3-for-6 with two RBI and a run scored. 

Freshman infielder Ryan McKay entered the weekend without any home runs, hit his second of the weekend with a solo homer on Sunday, finishing the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Junior designated hitter Noah Bright and senior catcher Sam Thompson both had two hits apiece, with Bright going 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the second stanza. Thompson was 2-for-4 and both he and Bright had two ribbies apiece and they each touched home twice. Senior outfielder Greg Ziegler was 1-for-3, but his one hit was a loud one with a three-run home run in the fourth, part of scoring two runs.
