PITTSBURGH – The Panthers host the Penn State Nittany Lions for their final home game of the 2024 season. Penn State won the first meeting this year when the two teams met in State College in March.
TOP OF THE ORDER
• Pitt earned a series victory over No. 8 Florida State last weekend, clinching their first ACC series win of the year.
• Senior C.J. Funk hit .412 with five home runs and 16 RBI in Pitt’s five games last week, including a three-homer game against Wright State last Wednesday.
• Ryan Andrade matched his start from last week at Notre Dame and picked up his second-consecutive win as he threw seven shutout innings against #8 FSU on Friday. Andrade struck out eight batters while allowing just three hits and three walks.
• Dom Popa is having the best year of his career, batting .326 with 60 hits and 45 runs scored. He’s tied for the team lead in hits (58), is second in runs scored (45), average (.326) and on base percentage (.439) and is third in doubles (9).
• First baseman Luke Cantwell is currently second in the ACC in on base percentage (.523), walks (49) and walks/game (1.00). He has reached base safely in 45-consecutive games, breaking Sky Duff’s single-season record of 43-consecutive games in 2022.
• Phil Fox has emerged as Pitt’s go-to late-inning arm out of the bullpen. He has appeared in 21 games and has given up just six runs. Fox is 3-2 with seven saves and a 1.62 ERA.
• The Panthers scored 45 combined runs over their two midweek games last week. It was the second-most in a two-game span in pro- gram history and their most since 1953.
